It turns out that in the third century in Rome ruled the emperor Claudius II where he decided to prohibit marriages to young lovers. A priest named Valentine considered this to be a mistake and decided to skip the order and secretly marry all young lovers who wanted to.

When the emperor learned of this act of rebellion, he sentenced the priest Valentine to death on 14 February 270. Valentine is the patron saint of lovers and is therefore celebrated every year.

Fun fact: The first Valentine's Day was celebrated on February 14, 494.
